Meet your dietitian

Nicky van Zyl

Nicky brings a wealth of expertise in the realms of eating disorders, including anorexia, bulimia, binge-eating disorder and ARFID. Her philosophy revolves around empowering you to implement lasting changes.

She aims to help you unravel the underlying triggers that may have hindered your progress in the past, ensuring that by the end of your journey with her, you can confidently sustain your improvements without ongoing assistance. Often, we can initiate short-term changes, but Nicky specialises in bridging the gap between short-term success and long-term maintenance.

Fees and Packages

Support is agreed in two steps: an initial assessment on its own, then — if it’s the right fit — a follow-up plan sized to what you actually need.

  1. Initial consultation — always booked on its own

Initial Assessment

A full 60-minute assessment with your dietitian, to understand what’s going on and agree whether — and what shape — ongoing support should take. Never bundled, so nothing is decided before we’ve actually met. Booked & paid on its own, every time.

£190/60 minutes

Follow-up options are only offered after this session, once we’ve agreed a plan together.

2. Choose your follow-up path

Frequently Asked Questions

This is not our initial goal, but we are happy to support you with this when the time is right. Many of the clients we work with have spent years trying one diet after the other and feeling like a failure. We want to empower you to understand what your body needs so that you don’t feel you have to restrict or deny yourself foods that you love. Once this has been successfully implemented, we can help you look at weight loss, if this is still something you would like.

We believe every single person is able to get better and we are very happy to support you with these goals. Saying that, we would need you to be seen and weighed regularly by your local GP and we would ask to have a timeframe, such as 4-6 weeks to agree if the process is working or not. We would also stress that weekly appointments are necessary to start with.

We treat all eating disorders, including anorexia, ARFID, bulimia and binge-eating disorder.

Unfortunately not. Our experience to date has been that zoom appointments are more popular than in person, so we have made the decision to keep everything online.

We ask that everyone give us 48hrs notice of cancellation or the full fee will be charged. We also ask that the first invoice is settled up front, before the initial consultation takes place. This is due to previous experiences of people not turning up to their appointments. If there is an emergency, we will do our best to accommodate it.

Yes. We work with all major health insurers, with the exception of AXA. If you have insurance, we’d recommend checking your policy for a couple of things before booking: whether dietetic support is covered, whether you need pre-authorisation from your insurer first, and whether we’re a recognised provider on your specific plan. We can bill your insurer directly, where they allow it — just let us know which insurer you’re with and we’ll confirm what to expect.

  • Nicky really listens to my aims as well as my fears

As an adult with Autism I have struggled with restricted eating all my life – I have tried many times myself to try to broaden my diet but I have never succeeded. Then I found Bluebird Centre.

The support I have received from Nicky has been truly life changing. Our sessions give me the opportunity to discuss my goals and reflect on times when I’ve struggled as well as times when I’ve succeeded.

In between our sessions I can interact with Nicky through the app – it’s fantastic to get this regular input from her, she can offer support and guidance on a nearly daily basis, and can celebrate alongside me when I achieve something.

Everything we do is done at my pace. Nicky really listens to my aims as well as my fears and helps me to develop a plan that both helps me progress towards my overall goal whilst not overwhelming me.

In the few months I’ve worked with Nicky so far I’ve seen my diet improve so much – I am eating things I never thought I would. My attitude to trying things has also improved so much, I’m beginning to feel more confident in saying yes to trying something new.

I am so glad I found The BlueBird Centre and will be forever grateful for what they have helped me to achieve so far, and I’m so excited to see what more I can achieve as I continue my work with Nicky.
